What is Vocational Education
and Training (VET)?
Australia’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) System
Australia has a national Vocational Education and Training (VET) system designed to deliver workplace specific skills and knowledge that is responsive to industry needs and comprise of industry relevant skills and knowledge relevant to specific tasks which make up a job role within an industry. Each industry has developed Training Packages of these roles, tasks, skills and knowledge (developed and endorsed by National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011
A Training Package is a set of nationally endorsed standards and qualifications for recognising and assessing people’s skills. A Training Package describes the skills and knowledge needed to perform effectively in the workplace. It does not describe how an individual should be trained. Teachers and trainers develop learning strategies – the how - depending on learners’ needs, abilities and circumstances.
Vocational Education and Training is delivered through accredited training via Registered Training Organisations which are registered through the Australian Skills Quality Authority – which is required to meet standards of National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011
VET is governed by the VET Quality Framework made up by the following:
Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015 - which includes the quality standards and requirements that all RTOs must comply with Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) national framework that encompasses all qualifications delivered by the three sectors that make up the Australian education system – the school sector, the vocational education and training (VET) sector, and the higher education sector).
Fit and Proper Person Requirements – to ensure the integrity of the primary officers of the RTO
Financial Viability Risk Assessment Requirements- to provide an indication of the financial health of an organisation will remain viable and sustain the ability for future growth
Data Provision Requirements 2012- requirements for data collection and submission eg AVETMISS data
